The World Outside of Barrel Racing
For those of you who think BAR S Farm is strictly a barrel racing farm think again.

Stan W has several different breeds of horses on his farm. Recently he has been working with Thorough Breds, Warmbloods, and even an Iclandic Horse, did you know they dont trot they TULT, who knew...

For those of you who dont know my wife has a 10 year old Danish Warmblood that does dressage. About 3 years ago, only 2 months after he was purchased, he injured his stifle and many vets told us the injury was career ending.

We hauled him to Cornell University in Ithaca NY where he had surgery and stem cell injections...after his surgery he was at Bar S Farm for 9 months for rehabilitation...

Everday Stan or Sue walked him for 10 minutes and kept a close eye on him. After that we moved to 10 minute walks and than trots. Stan began lightly lunging him and Sue began the light trot work to rebuild that stifle.

Needless to say there were a few set backs but Stan and Sue were determined to see this horse come back from the dead.

About 9 months later Lamborghini was ready to go home. His rehabilitation was now over. He went through several different exercises including 3 months at an Under Water Aquapacer, several visits and shots from our vet, and tender loving care from the Stan and Sue.

Lamborghini has been working well now for 2 years. However he has had some set backs when it comes to manners mostly on the ground...for this the course of action was taking him back to Bar S Farm where Stan W worked with him using different techniques. Many of my wife's friends called it Cowboy Camp. This was just not a one time camp but several different months of him returning to Bar S Farm to correct his ground manners.

I am glad to announce that he is a different horse today...not your typical Warmblood that is a fruit loop on the ground...he listens to you, does not turn away from you in the stall, and lowers his head into the halter when you approach him...things he was doing before taking him to Stan.

Stan has been working with him to correct the issues he has with the farrier. Since his surgery he does not like to have back shoes put on..but since the first of the year Stan has been working with him and I am glad to say that putting back shoes on him is no longer an all day project. No drugs were used just good old fashion horsemanship.

Lamborghini recently showed at an International Show in Kentucky sponsored by Adaquan. This was an FEI CDI show...for those that are in the know..,Lamborghini received 2 Gold Medals. One for Individual Performance and one for Musical Freestyle.

This would never had happen without the persistance, tough love, and great people helping to bring Lamborghini back from his almost career ending injury.

I like to thank everyone involved and especially Stan and Sue that were there at the beginning and the end of our long road to recovery.

Stan W and Bar S Farm is still a vital part of Lamborghini's training. He is there every 6 weeks to get his shoes put on with no drugs used. The all natural approach...good old fashion patience and horsemanship. Stan re-enforces everything he has taught him over the last year. I can tell you that he is a happier horse because of it and my wife no longer has to worry about her horse being a threat to her on the ground.

So I would just like to say thank you thank you thank you for all your help...and remember Bar S Farm is just not a Barrel Racing and Training farm but a place to bring horses of all breeds and of any discipline for help in all areas.

Salem County 4H County Fair

This show was on Friday August 7th at the fair grounds. After getting over having to pay $5 to park our rigs it turned out to be a good show. But can you believe we had to pay in order to be part of the barrel race...I never heard of such a thing...ok I am going to let it go...

Anyway there were 84 riders in the show. Probably one of the bigger locals shows we have had in a long time. Maybe because it was $1000 added.

So here is the run down...

Stevie W ran Fly with a 16.407 and ended up coming in 3rd but was 2nd in the 2D. He also ran County with a 16.9 and picked up a check in the 3rd D. Stevie is now the big money earner at BAR S Farm for 2009 Season. Another couple of shows and Stevie and Fly should be unbeatable.

Stan W. ran Diva in the 2D with a 16.599. Just missed a check but Diva looked great. This pair is finally starting to gel to perfection. La La also ran a 16.9...watch out for this duo...a few more races and this little mare will be burning up the arena...Stan and Daisy had a 16.7 but knocked the 2nd barrel...not a bad day for Stan W our fearless leader.

Sue W ran Blue with a 16.8 and placed 2nd in the 3rd D. She also ran Zorro for the first time with a 17.1...she is trailing Steve with money earned this year...

Dave ran his old faithful...Tipper...ran an 18.0 and picked up a check in the 4D.

Heather Smiley...well what can I say about this 14 year old wondergirl...she started running this year with her mare Taz and was crashing and burning but all of sudden something just clicked...she ran a 16.546...unbelievable...she is no longer a contributor but is now a competitor...watch out for this young girl...she is the next best thing...

After sitting on the sidelines watching her younger sister Heather eat up the course Danielle finally decided to jump in the pool...she is now riding her new mare Rosie...even though she did not have a successful first showing she is definitely one to watch for the future...I am sure once she starts geling with her mare she will be another force to be reckoning with...

If you are wondering who won it it was Jesse Longmuir with a 15.810...she was the only one in the 1D and took home the whole purse...they should have charged her $10 to park...

Kudos to Sue Ulmer, Steve Owens, Diane Owens and Amanda Lloyd for putting on and running a very nice show. We should have more like this one.

See you all at the next race...

Rain Rain Go Away

Well last week at Sue Ulmers in Woodstown NJ was one big mess.

It was dark all morning and when I got there it looked like we werent in Kansas anymore.

What a gloomy dismal day to try and run a barrel show. The biggest mistake of the day was not that they tried to have the show is the fact they we took 11 horses there. We should have stayed home where we would have been nice and dry and warm.

We went anyway and just as the first horse starts to run it begins to rain. We go in rain delay and than the game called due to rain. So what a waste of a day.

We should have known better. The only thing that worked out that day is I found some sicilian eggplant on the way home at a road side stand in Gibbstown. How sweet they are. So for me it ended in a good day. But for the horses that were being shuffled on and off the trailer it was a pure nightmare.

I can tell you that instead of a barrel horse show it was more like a wet t-shirt contest.

We will be at Salem County Fairground Friday Night August 7th. Big show at the fair should be really good.

Hope to see everyone there.

D&D Show July 12

Im back...sorry for the delay...Well it was a rough show on Sunday at D&D farm. The barrel Gods were not shining on anyone this day.

There were close to 50 riders and I would have to say at least half of the class knocked.

So here is the run down:

Stan W. Rode 3 horses Daisy, Diva, and LaLa.

Daisy Ran a 16.4 Diva a 16.0 and LaLa a 15.9.

Stan picked up a check on LaLa. This young 4 yr old mare is really starting to come into her own.

Steve W. Rode Fly 15.4 and knocked after holding up the 1st and 2nd...County knocked, Rosie Knocked...Just not Stevie's day...

Sue W Rode her steady mount Blue. She won the 2nd D with a 15.7. This is one pair you can always depend on for a check.

Heather Smiley...This young cowgirl has come a long way...Taz is really starting come into his own...Heather came motoring in and finished with a 15.2...the bad part is she knocked the 3rd barrel...whatever the girl still ran a 15.2...watch out for Heather....

Dave...You know it is a bad day when this duo knocks...Tipper came out of the 2nd and knocked...no check for Dave and Tipper...

Pam...not a great day for this pair...lets hope they get it together soon...

Amanda Loyd won it with a 15.193 and Terry Birmingham came in 2nd and 3rd...

So not the greatest day of our barrel career. Lets face the facts they cannot all be good days...how would you appreciate the good days if there were not a few bad ones in there...it keeps us all humble and hungry for the next race.

Anyway that is my report...We will be a Sue Ulmers farm on August 2nd and then the Salem County Fair Ground on Friday August 7th...Salem County Fair should be a great show hope to see you all there...

Sue Ulmers June 28th

It was a very hot day...at least for me. I could not wait to get back in the car and turn the air on...

I met the whole crew there about 12:30...the ground was excellent and it made for good running...

Times were very close today...15.624 was the winning time clocked by Amanda Lloyd. Sue and Blue came in 4th with a 15.696 and Steve W came in 3rd on Fly with a 15.683. Stevie also ran County, his futurity mount and ran a 16.2 and came in 4th in the 2D.

Stevie increased his winnings for the year to over $2000...we know this because he keeps reminding us that he is the big money earner on the farm.

Stan W ran La La, Diva, and Daisy. 16.4 on La La, 16.0 on Diva, and a 16.1 on Daisy. He won the 2D on Daisy. Stan is riding all the upcoming babies...keep your eyes on them because they are the up and coming open horses.

Dave, my Dad, ran a 16.5 respectively. Pam and Heather did very well but did not cash. Pam had an excellent run but just touched the 2nd barrel. She would have been in the money. She is the one to watch at the next show. D&D July 11th.

Well that is it...we have a bi this weekend except for Stevie...He is in Upper Marlboro running Fly and Rosie. Good Luck to Stevie...he is flying solo this weekend...rest of the crew stayed home for some well needed rest.

See you all next weekend...

We Made The Paper Again!!!

Ok...Steve gets some respect...he is mentioned in the Barrel Horse News Regional Report.

Way to go Stevie...

We made the Paper!!!

Ok Stan made the paper. It is actually the Horse Resource Magazine. I really like this magazine...alot of information on events around the country...not just because Stan is mentioned...but it is nice...

Here is the NO RESPECT PART of the article...Steve W actually won the average on Especial County and Stan picked up one check in the 3D with First Smart Diva...Sorry Steve I will contact the editor...

Steve? Stan? does it matter...if you ask Stevie he will tell you YES IT DOES...

Herrington DE June 20th

So after coming off a long weekend in West Virginia I decided to stay home for the next show. Our fearless leader Stan decided to go to Herrington just to Exhibition the horses.

It was a good idea after the long weekend we had in WV Stan wanted to get the horse back in the arena but didnt feel like spending a whole day in DE. So they got there bright and early exhibitions some horses and was on the way home by 11am.

Stevie Stan Heather and Pam all went for the early exhibition session...and once again the ground was below average...what is going on with the ground situation...dont these show producers know that the ground means everything...

Well this was par for the course everyone did there job and cowboyed and cowgirled up for the day...

Next show is at Sue Ulmers on June 28th see you all there...

West Virginia Barrel Futurity June 12-14

We are on our way home and I decided to write this blog now since Stan is listening to the baseball game and it is boring.

It was a long ride to WV. Stan drove the entire way and between the rain and the mountains through Maryland and WV it was a rough ride. But Stan kept us moving and got us through the storms with out a scratch. Everyone else slept in the back like kids before Christmas day anticipating Christmas morning. In our case it was Futurity Morning.

We arrived safely around 8 am. We quickly got to work like a bunch of worker bees. By 10 am the horses were in there stalls and we were ready for war.

After eating breakfast and checking in to the hotel we went back to the show to begin riding horses.

The first event of the weekend was Poles on Friday night. Stan entered Blue and Tipper. Unfortunately Tipper, our awesome pole horse came out of exhibition and did something to his leg. So it was just Blue. He did well but we were in pole country and these boys can run some poles. It didn’t matter we were there to chase some cans.

Saturday morning at 8:30 am sharp futurity started. Diva came out running and ran a 17.20 with Stan at the controls. A very nice run for Diva but just slightly to fast for the 2 D and too slow for the 1st D. The second go she did well but still didn’t cash. We are still very proud of both rider and horse.

La La is now on deck and Stan is at the control. La La is not quite ready for futurity. She ran 17.8 repectively. She is working real nice but not ready to run with the big dogs. Probably be ready for the Derby next year.

County is in the hole. Steve W is the pilot and won the 2nd D the first go. This is Steve’s second win at his second futurity. Steve is 2 for 2. Steve ran 17.4 each day but was quite cautious the second day, since we had a little scare with his mount. After the first go, County came out of the arena holding her front leg up in the air. We were all scared and thought she broke something. Needless to say quite we were all relieved when we figured out that a rock came in under the bell boot and gave her a shock. It about 5 minutes she was sound as a dollar. What a relief.

The ground was excellent and it was a very big patter. Winning times were 16.5 to give you some idea of how big the pattern was. We rode against some of the top names in Futurity riders including Troy Crumrine, Leslie Willis, Jhonda Cox just to name a few.

The Bar S crew ran 3 open horses and even though they all ran very well unfortunately we were out of the money…too slow for the 1st D and too fast for the 2nd D…always a bridesmaid never a bride.

You can’t win them all but you can sure try…you have to put yourself out there in order to succeed at what you want to do and we are truly doing that…this writer will let you know our plans on the next futurity….and that is all I have to say about that….

Shale Knoll

Well Stan Stevie and I went to Shale Knoll to run 4 horses. The Futurity Horses and Fly.

What a day it was. To Start when we came off the PA Turnpike Stevie realized he had no turn signals. We pulled over and the plug wire was dragging on the ground and ripped right through the wire...needless to say the wire had road burn...we quickly got to work and cut the wire and rewired the plug...the good thing is we pulled over right in front of a trailer dealer...bought a new plug just in case and was on our way...

At this point we are sooooooo late...we get to the show and I run in to sign us up and they were ready to get started with the open...but they were kind enough to wait for us to tack up and exhibition our horses...I quickly go back to the truck and Stevie and Stan are gone with the truck running horses in the trailer and both doors left open...there was a runaway horse and they went after it like to cowboys...I quickly parked the truck and started to unload...

Here they both come out of breathe and still with no horse...but they tried...

We exhibitioned and ran...Stevie won the 2D with County...everyone ran well considering that the ground was better suited for motorcross than it was for barrel racing.

My poor LaLa fell at the canyon around the 2nd barrel but quickly recovered and picked up a check in the 4D.

We arrived at 11:00 am and were on our way home by 1:45...what a day.

So this day was one for the never to do again list...NEVER GO TO SHALE KNOLL WITHOUT A DIRTBIKE...

Best part of the day is when we found a great deli and got some great sandwiches for the ride home...if you know me you know I am all about eating when I am on the road...

Till next time...

D&D Show June 6th

Well another day at the races. We took 10 horses on a beautiful sunny day at the lovely D&D Stables in Buena Vista NJ.

Sue and Blue were the first ones out of the gate and ran a 15.3…great way to start the show.

Stevie, bad foot and all, ran County and got a 15.7. He also rode his new mount Fly and ran a 15.2. Watch out for this dynamic duo…this was his first time running Fly…he will be unstoppable once he gets a few more ride on this magnificent gelding.

Stan ran 3 horses that day First Smart Diva with a 16.0 Okie La Jolla with a 16.0 and Daisy with a 15.4. Diva and La La won 2nd and 3rd in the 3rd D.

Heather on Taz ran a 15.7…this girl has come a long way and is showing tremendous improvement. Watch out for Heather she is the up and coming youth rider you will have to watch out for.

Dave on Tipper with another impressive run 15.9. You would never know that Tipper is 21 years old.

Pam and Gracie did not have the best of days. A little trouble at the first barrel…we commend Pam for always giving 150%...Pam gives her heart and soul when she runs…better luck at the next show.

Roberto, that’s me, well I crashed and burned on the first barrel. Don’t ask me what happen but it was definitely pilot error. It my defense it was the first time I rode the horse…ok it doesn’t matter I screwed up…end of story…but even when I suck I am good…Rosie ran a 17.3 and picked up a check in the 4th D.

The track was very fast that day with a lot of 15.1 times. It was good running. 14.9 won the show. It was Lisa McCarthy once again who wins it.

So the day finished with 4 horses picking up checks. Not bad for a days work.

We are off to West Virginia Friday Morning to compete in the Futurity Race and Open.

I will let you all know how it goes when I get back…

Editor Note:

We did attend a show in Westminster MD and last week at Sue Ulmers.

We did pick up a couple checks in MD and Sue W won Sue Ulmers show on Blue to save the day.

Whats going on at BAR S FARM

Well once again the rain has canceled another show. I cannot remember the last time we ran. However this weekend looks good and we will be going to Hanover Maryland. We actually went to Westminister…

Our buddy Tom Fuchs ran his TB Gelding King Bling at the opening day at Atlantic City Race Track. Tom keeps all 8 of his horses at Bar S Farm for the winter.

Opening Day at AC was the perfect day. For those of you that are not in TB racing AC has to have 3 live races a year in order to keep simalcasting races across the country. My Dad Uncle and I went to support King Bling.

For those of you who remember AC Race Track in its hay day would be very depressed to see what it has turned into. I can tell you first hand that it was quite upsetting to see what it has turned into. It is not the glamorous place it once was. No fancy restaurants no red carpet and no fancy decor just the basics. You can get a hot dog and pretzel served from an 8 foot banquet tables. Beer is cold just like the feeling of the room.

Anyway King Bling ran excellent. He was 12-1 before the race and went off at 3-1. They ran on the turf because the dirt track needs about a year of work before you could even think about running on it. The tote boards are boarded up with plywood so you have to go inside to get the results.

The race is a mile and a quarter King Bling lost by a 1/2 length. So he took second. This big better won back his money and enjoyed the day.

There is a new addition at the farm. His name is Shock the Bully...he is a 2 year old colt out of Marthas Six Moon and Bully Bullion. Look for him in 2011 Futurities. Also we are in the process of finding a name for him. If anyone has any suggestions feel free to email them to us. If your name is chosen you will receive a free lesson from Stan...

HEALTH CHECK:

Stan is doing much better and is no longer walking like a caveman. Yes he went to the chiropractor and is feeling much better.

Well thats it for this week...hopefully we will not get rained out this week and we will see you in Maryland...

D&D 2 weeks ago

Sorry for the delay but have been a little busy.

However, the D&D show was good and bad...had its ups and downs...I will give you the run down.

There were 40 riders and and it was good running that day.

Steve W do very well on his 4 year futurity mount Especial County and ran a 15.6 increasing his time by 3/10th of a second last time he ran at D&D. This mare is really starting to come into her own. He won the 2nd D.

Steve also ran CC and she ran 15.8 respectively...

Stan W...bad day for Stan...you know Stan is not one to say he is hurting but he was. White as a ghost that day his back was killing him. He should have scratched but he didnt...so he crashed and burned on Fly and Diva...he went to the doctors on Monday and is felling better...so watch out for him this weekend at Sue's.

Sue W...what can I say... had a little problem at the first but finished hard…no one runs Blue better than her.

Amanda Kate ran La La and beat her personable best by 2/10th of second...She picked up a check in the 3rd D.

Pam...always trying and giving it her best ran a 15.9.

David Faltz gets the "thata boy award" his first time ever he breaks into the 15 second time with a 15.9...no one rides Tipper better than him. He is 65 and is still winning...he picked up 2nd place in the 3rd D.

If you are wondering why we are running in the 2D 3D is because 15.0 was winning it until Lorraine Bytheway ran a 14.9 on her gray and changed all the times and than out of no where Eileen Hanna runs a 14.5...OMG...arena record BUT SHE KNOCKED...but kudos to Eileen anyway...

Well this was the UPs and DOWNs of the show. Hope to see you all at the next one which will be at Sue Ulmers Farm. I forgot the name of it...

Thank you to all the contributors and competitors...I will be looking to take your money again at the next show.

Results From Our First Futurity Lewisburg Ohio March 27-29

Our first Futurity was an experience to remember from the ride there all the way to the ride home.

We left 1am Thursday morning with several days before that of preperation, check lists, and excitement before we began our journey to the mid west.

Stevie drove the entire 10 hours there and the whole way home...Stan slept in the back and I tried to stay up with little cat naps here and there. But Stevie was a trooper driving the entire trip. But you know Steve's moto..."if its got wheels I can drive it and if it has hair I can ride it."

Of course it was a rainy day as we pulled up to the Circle G Ranch in Lewisburg Ohio but we did not care we were focused and new what we had to accomplish. From preparing the stalls to warming up our horses. OK the truth is we were tired and hungry...

Move in was fun...muddy, rainy, and the 3 of us telling each other what to do is always a fun beginning of a 4 day trip. Every one had there own way of doing things, but of course Stevie and I (Roberto) listened to Stan since he was our fearless leader.

After setting up the stalls and looking around a bit we decided to get some energy and find a place to eat...well let me tell you...the best place in town was a buffet that looked very good when we were starving but not that great afterwards...

Now to the hotel...what a mess...the Days Inn horrible. Even though it was $45 cheaper than the Holiday in accross the street it was definitely not worth it...I would rather stay in a Porta Potty than that hotel. Anyway we were lucky to get a room at the Holiday Inn and they were very nice and accomodating. So we got lucky that we did not have to stay at the Days Inn.

Back to the Farm...with our bellies full and a nice and clean place to sleep we headed back to the ranch to start riding the 6 horses we brought. The mares screaming away and the 2 boys seasoned professionals just waiting there turn.

About Circle G...very nice place. Snack Bar was good with excellent pie...some people rate the place you are running at by the ground, the stalls, or the arena itself. I base it on the Kitchen. If I can get good grub at a show it is a good place to run. I like to eat what can I say. If I am happy I run better.

We ran Friday nights open but only 3 horses. Saturday was the big day with the Futurity first and Open second.

After fine tuning on Friday night we were ready for Saturday. This pen for us was a challenge since we are not use to running 2 miles to the first barrel...the pattern was huge needless to say. However, we cowboyed up and did our job.

Horses performed well except one but we wont name names...she was too busy saying hi to the crowd and seeing what she could buy after she ran at the tack vendors...alot going on at the arena...

All in all in was a great trip we did not place in the open but we did place in the futurity on the 2nd day. County won the average in the 3d and Diva won the 3rd place in the 3d. Times were tight seperating horses by thousands of a second. Keep in mind the times were 1/2 second splits not full seconds like an open show.

We were very happy with the show on the whole and would definitely go back to Circle G Ranch. Most everyone was nice...ok few people...I think at least this city boy was a little out of place...I tried to talk with a slight accent to try to fit in but it did not help...but still great place to go and would definitely go back.

Kudos to Karen from IBRA and Circle G for putting on a great show.
